Overview

A bustling town around 130km south-west of Jaipur (in Rajasthan), Ajmer stands amidst the rugged Aravalli hills and surrounds the quiet and peaceful Ana Sagar Lake. An underlined name in the Islamic history and heritage, Ajmer is India’s most important Muslim pilgrimage centre. The place is the bed to the shrine of Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chishti, a revered Sufi Saint who founded the Chishtiya order. The place is also an important centre for the Jain religion with its golden Jain temple. The place usually is brimming with devotees and gets even busier during the Ramadan and Urs - anniversary of the saint’s death. It’s a fact that Ajmer is usually preferred as a pit-stop for most travelers on their way to the sacred town Pushkar. Pushkar is popular for Brahma Mandir, largest animal fair and also known as a popular hangout for hippies. Ajmer has also been shopper’s delight with its vibrant array of blue-pottery items that a toursist can buy as a souvenier on a India day tour to the city.

How to visit:

By road: The national highway roads are well connected to Ajmer and are easily accessible by air-conditioned bus services by government as well as private transport facility.

By rail: Ajmer Junction (All) is the train station to connect trains to Pushkar. As of now only diesel engines runs on the broad gauge.

By air: Kishangarh airport is the nearest airport to Ajmer, which is expected to be operational in 2016. Other nearest airport is Jaipur airport at a distance of 145 kms
