About Kaziranga National Park

Spreading over an area of 430 sq kms, Kaziranga National Park is one of the most popular national park in India. Located in the north eastern state of Assam, on the southern banks of Brahmaputra river, Kaziranga national park attained the status of reserve forest in 1908, a wildlife sanctuary by 1950 and a national park in 1974. The park was declared a world Heritage site in 1985. Despite a spate of poaching activities at one time, the park has managed to keep alive some of the most endangered animals of the country. Today, the park attracts a whole lot of visitors from both India and abroad to explore its magnificient animals.
The terrain of the park is mostly flat and covered with huge elephant grass. In between, there are swamps formed by the over flooding of Brahmaputra. These swamps are full of water lilies, water hyacinth and lotus. The vegetation of the park consists of semi - evergreen forests.
Best Time to Visit
The National Park is best visited during the months between November to April. During the monsoon, the Brahmaputra river over flows forcing the animals to seek shelter in another part of the park.
Kaziranga Wildlife
The Kaziranga National Park is famous as the land of Rhinoceros Unicornisor the one horned Rhino that is found only in India. The park is, infact the last refuge for the awesome rhino who, due to constant efforts and perseverance of few people, now number a respectable thousand. Tourists, on their visit to the park can find the rhino roaming around openly.
Fauna
Apart from the great Indian rhino, the animals that can be seen in the park include the Indian elephants (700 humdred), Indian bison (22), swamp deer orbarasingha (700), hog deer (7000), sloth bears, tigers (50), leopard cats, jungle cats, otters (300), hog badgers, capped langurs, hoolock gibbons, wild Boar (700), jackal and wild buffalo.
Reptiles in the park
The reptile population of the park comprises pythons monitor lizards,varieties of snake and turtles.
Avi Fauna
For the lovers of birds, Kaziranga is a must visit as the park is a anabode of numerous colourful birds, who fill the air with their mellifluousvoice. These birds include oriental honey buzzard, black-shouldered kite, black kite, brahminy kite, pallas's fishing eagle, white tailed eagle,grey-headed fishing eagle, himalayan griffon, greylag geese, bar-headedgeese, ruddy shelduck, gadwall, crested serpent eagle, swamp partridge, redjungle fowl, Bengal floricab, whistling teal, pelicans, black necked storks, adjutant storks, open billed storks, egrets, herons, falcated duck, red-crested pochard and northern shoveller.

Elephant and Jeep safari - Elephant safari early in the morning is the best way for the tourists to view the animals and birds of the park. The trip leads the tourists to Baguri, Hole Path, Mihimukh, Kohora-Central Path and Arimarah. In Kaziranga, visitors can thus remain assured of getting the nearest possible glimpse of magnificient animals and birds. Reaching There
» By Air - The closest airport is in Guwahati, which is 217 km away from the park. There is also an airport at Jorhat which is around 97-km from Kaziranga.
» By Rail - The closest rail head is at Furkating. Which is at a distance of 75 kms from Kaziranga National Park.
» By Road - The main gate for Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary opens at Kohora which is on the NH-37. Regular buses connect Kaziranga on their way to and from Guwahati, Tezpur and Upper Assam.
