Sarnath is a small but famous village located 06 kilometers north of the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage centre of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. The name Sarnath is derived from the word Saranganath which means “Lord of the Deer”. Sarnath is famous as the site of the deer park where Lord Buddha is said to preached his first sermon to set in motion of the wheel of the Dharma. Sarnath is one of the majour Buddhist pilgrimage destinations in India and is an ideal place to meditate, take a retreat and walk around in the pilgrimage city.
Major Tourist Attractions in Sarnath :
Ashoka Pillar : Ashoka Pillar at Sarnath also known as national symbol of India is one of the most famous and frequently visited tourist spots in India.
Emperor Ashoka – The Great Maurya ruler constructed this pillar to commemorate the site of first preaching of Gautam Buddha (Lord Buddha).
The Chaukhandi Stupa : It is one of the important Buddhist stupas in India which was originally a terraced temple constructed during Gupta period. Later on Govardhan, son of Raja Todarmal built an octagonal tower thereby giving the present shape to Chaukhandi stupa.
Dharmarajika Stupa : The Dharmarajika Stupa which signifies the seat of Holy Buddha was built by Emperor Ashoka to enshrine Lord Buddha’s relics.
How to Reach
By Air : The nearest airport to Sarnath is Varanasi (18 kms) which is one of the important domestic airport in India and is well connected by major cities like Delhi, Agra, Mumbai and Katmandu by means of regular flights operating between them.
By Rail : The nearest Railway station to Sarnath are Varanasi and Mughal Sarai which are well connected by large number of important trains from rest of the country.
By Road : Sarnath is easily accessible by road from Varanasi and other Major Tourists destinations in Northern India like Bodhgaya, Lucknow, Kanpur, Allahabad, Agra and Mathura.
Best time to visit :
November to March is suppose to be the best time to visit Sarnath and other majour tourist destinations of North India. If you are on budget and wish to avail the benefits of summer discount then you may consider to travel between April to August.
